Gion Kyoto

This is a photo which I took on Hanami Lane (花見小路) in Gion (祇園) Kyoto.

Hanami Lane is one of streets which are reminding traditional Japanese atmosphere in Kyoto.
Gion originally developed the shrine town of Yasaka Jinja (八坂神社). Shrine towns and temple towns in Japan correspond to cathedral cities in Europe. People have visited sacred places. So, whereupon merchants, shopkeepers and a lot of business have gathering before there. It became a town. Gion was also one of such towns.

Gion is a very famous erea which visitors can see maiko (舞妓). Maiko is an apprentice geisha (芸者) in Kyoto. Geisha are traditional Japanese female entertainers who act as hostesses and whose skills include performing various Japanese arts such as classical music, dance and games.

When travellers see maiko on a street, they may be very glad to see her traditional costume. Maiko and their kimono (Japanese traditional clothes) are very beautiful. But if you see them, please don't be noisy. Maiko are not a tourist attractions. They are as traditional office ladies in a traditional area. Then they are commuters who are travelling to work.
