Fushimi Kyoto by SheltieWolf Fushimi Kyoto by SheltieWolf

Fushimi Inari(伏見稲荷) in Kyoto(京都).

Fushimi Inari is one of the most famous shrines in Japan. It's famous for a lot of torii (red arch gates) and fox statues.
Especially almost visitors walk under Senbon Torii (
千本鳥居)(One thousand torii). It's just the arch tunnel of red torii standing on back area of the main shrine.

Even going through Senbon Torii, the pilgrimage routes still lead to a mountain behind.

There are huge numbers of torii as Senbon Torii on almost pilgrimage routes. Nobody knows how many torii are standing in the site of Fushimi Inari, but one theory goes as numbers of torii in Fushimi Inari are about 10,000 if it's included small torii which people can't pass under.

The pilgrimage routes in the forest are mysterious, filled with warm sunlight filtering down through the trees and calm atmosphere. There are a lot of side routes, shrines, fox statues. A lot of Japanese gods lives in there. If you walk almost pilgrimage routes in Fushimi Inari, you can enjoy traditional atmosphere in Japanese mythology to your heart's content all day long. :)

It's a very special feeling to walk under torii for hours and I'd like to do it again.

There is so many path that you can walk a full day without walking two time under the same torii.
Just think about looking on the sides of the path you'll see nice things too.

I didn't know the lifespan of a torri but as Is saw some rotten they must be rebuild from time to time, but with the total number even replace few of them mean they must replace a lot each year.

Wow, you've ever visited Fushimi Inari, haven't you? ^^

Lifespan of a torii is about 15~20 years. :)

Yes  I did. I was surprise to see how big it was because I was thinking there is only  the two torii tunnel at the main gate. Then I saw there is  more torii, and just try to see how far I can go, and it go far !
At a time I was on a place with some food and tea shop, it was the only place from the start of my walk where I can see the town, It was like an accomplishment, a reward after a so long walking, to give you the required energy to go to the top !

What amazes me is that where Shigeru Miyamoto came up with a few ideas of the ideas for Star Fox, including the idea of making the main character a fox.

Sorry, I've never played Star Fox. I don't know well.
But does Star Fox have something to do with fox statues in Inari Shrine? :)

Miyamoto visted the shrine and it inspired him to create his main character a fox as well as other things. Fox McCloud the main character from the series has a red scarf much like the statues there. Legend has it that the Inari where able to fly and while Miyamoto was walking through the arches, he envisioned a fox going through them.

Sadly I havn't seen it in october XD But I guess we watched the main shrine. Our tour guide told us there was a roadwork on it (that's why I'm not shoure if it was the right shrine) But we saw a little fox shrine with a few red torii in Hiroshima <3 it ws next to our hotel.

You must visit Fushimi Inari the next time. :D
Yes. If komainu which you watched are fox type and torii was red, it must be Inari Shrine.
Inari is a god of harvest, very famous and popular god in Japan.
So there are a lot of small Inari shrine throughout Japan.
Fushimi Inari is head Inari Shrine. :D
